Greetings Marching Band Families,

As a courtesy to our freshmen families and a reminder to our veteran families, I thought I would send out some basic information to help you know what to expect for our first regular game of the season. Mr. Hartgrove has already provided this information to the students, but if your teen is like mine, messages do not always get passed along. ;-)

Game day: Some of our students who ride the bus or carpool to school find it more convenient to stay on campus after school on game days. They usually hang out together indoors in the lobby area in front of the auditorium. There are teachers, administrators and other adults who also stick around on game days so this is fine. If your student will be staying on campus after school, please have them pack a brown bag dinner so that they will have a meal before the game.

Call time: The students need to be on campus no later than 5 p.m. for this Friday’s game so that they have time to help load their instruments on the truck and change into their uniforms. Call times may differ for games that are more distant from the MPHS campus. Mr. Hartgrove always announces call times to the students. If your child missed the announcement, or is unsure about call time, they should contact their section leader. (NOTE: Section leaders are veteran students who are very good sources of information. Your son or daughter should have their section leader’s contact information readily available should they have other questions about marching band.)

Departure: The bus leaves at 5:30 p.m. for this Friday’s game. Departure times will vary depending on the distance to away games.

Uniforms: Students are expected to wear their black show shirts or other black t-shirt and black shorts under their uniforms as well as black socks that go up to at least mid calf. We do not want any colorful clothing or bare ankles showing through the uniforms and distracting from the performance. The students have been issued marching shoes that go home with them, please remind them to be sure they wear them or bring them to change into at school.

Away games: Students are expected to ride the bus to the away school before the game and back to Mountain Pointe after the game unless a specific arrangement has been made with Mr. Hartgrove. Parents wishing to drive their son or daughter home after away games must come and check their student out from Mr. Hartgrove in person before the student leaves the group. This is for the safety of our students and so that there is no misunderstanding about who will and who will not be returning on the bus. If they are not returning to school on the bus, students are responsible for making arrangements with their section leader to get their uniforms back to school that night. As soon as the equipment truck is loaded and the students are all accounted for on the bus, the group returns directly to Mountain Pointe.

During the game: Marching band members are not permitted to eat while wearing their uniforms. Please be sure they have a good dinner before the game. The band boosters provide ice water from coolers during games to ensure our students stay hydrated. In the past, we have used plastic cups for this, but to avoid having to assign someone to wash 50-plus cups each week, we are asking students to bring their own refillable water container to games this year. We will still provide unlimited refills of ice water, we just want each student to be responsible for their own container.

After the game: Band members are expected to perform during the entire game, help unload the equipment truck for away games and move equipment and instruments from the field to the band room for home games. Football games generally end between 9:30 and 10:00, but you will need to factor in time for instruments and uniforms to be put neatly away when you are determining what time to pick up your student after games.

The boosters invite and encourage you to come out to the games each week. The football season promises to be an exciting one and you will enjoy seeing the band’s performances improve each week. Parent t-shirts are in, so if you have not yet picked yours up, we will have them available between 5 and 5:30 at school on Friday.

If you have any questions or concerns about marching season, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the executive board or Mr. Hartgrove

I hope to see you on Friday!

Carol Greeney
